On January 11, 2021, our family faced the unimaginable: a terminal brain cancer diagnosis for my courageous husband of 25 years and retired city of Tampa firefighter. The weight of this illness rippled through our family, leaving us shattered.
The changes we experienced as a family were profound and indescribable. We were overwhelmed by emotions, with fear and loneliness cutting the deepest. These feelings linger like shadows when a loved one is ill, and words offer little comfort.
As I supported my husband through his medical journey, my children felt my absence. Their initial physical loneliness soon turned into emotional and spiritual isolation.
Resources for my children were scarce, and it wasn't until after my husband's passing that I fully grasped the extent of their emotional wounds. Their well-being, education, and daily lives were profoundly affected.
By the grace of God, I began helping my children reclaim what they had lost, marking the start of our spiritual journey toward healing. We discovered remarkable sources of strength and renewal.
I wondered about those lacking resources or the resilience to heal on their own. This inspired me to share our story through the Thomas Scott Cawley Foundation, dedicated to supporting other families facing similar struggles. By extending a helping hand, I hope to guide families through the aftermath of devastating cancer diagnoses in active and retired firefighters who gave so much to their communities, friends and families.
My husband was an extraordinary spirit and a beacon of light. He will be forever missed, but his legacy lives on. He would be deeply honored to know that his memory inspires healing and hope, helping rebuild lives against incredible odds—in tribute to a truly courageous man, Thomas Scott Cawley.
